Gold's fall to pump up Indian demand

After a gap of nearly five months, there is some cheer emerging from India for the bullion market, as buyers appear to be taking advantage of the relatively low gold prices. Gold demand has picked up across the country, according to traders, despite it being an `inauspicious' period as per the Hindu calender.

The auspicious Navratri festival is celebrated to worship the nine different forms of Goddess Durga. This year, Navratri starts on September 25 and lasts untilOctober 3. Durga Puja celebrations begin on September 29, 2014.

The Hindu festival of nine nights dedicated to the glorification of Shakti, the feminine form of the Divine. During these nine nights, the mother goddess is worshipped in nine different forms. Women tend to dress up in their finery and adorn themselves with gold jewellery on each of the nine nights.

Navratri culminates on the 10th day with the festivities of Vijayadashami, also known as Dusshera, a day when gold buying in earnest resumes across the country.
